Alicent Hightower and King Viserys I Targaryen had four children across House of the Dragon season 1's timeline, though only three were shown on screen. Their firstborn was Aegon, who is now King Aegon II Targaryen. He was followed by Helaena Targaryen, whom he was later married to, and then Aemond Targaryen. Alicent and Viserys' fourth and final child is Daeron Targaryen, who was absent during season 1 as a ward in Oldtown.
Rhaenyra Targaryen, cheered as the Realm's Delight when she was young, and later called the Half-Year Queen, was the first-born child of King Viserys I Targaryen. Rhaenyra was King Viserys I's only living child by his first wife, Queen Aemma of House Arryn. At the age of eight, she was made her father's heir, and grew up expecting to become the first ruling Queen of Westeros. Rhaenyra was a dragonrider whose mount was Syrax
Otto Hightower was a knight from House Hightower of Oldtown who served as Hand of the King to three kings, although two of the kings removed him from office at various times. He was the younger brother of Lord Hightower, and the uncle of Lord Ormund Hightower. His children included Alicent Hightower, the second queen of King Viserys I Targaryen, and Ser Gwayne Hightower, second in command of the gold cloaks. Otto is remembered as a warning that knowledge is not everything.
Gwayne wasn’t a very significant character during the Dance in Fire & Blood, but that seems to be changing in House of the Dragon season 2. This is most likely because the show needs another important character for Ser Criston Cole to bounce off of during the upcoming battles. While Criston Cole led Aegon’s army throughout the Dance and occasionally convened with Aemond, his story became quite separate from the other main players. With Gwayne Hightower traveling across the realm and fighting in battle with Criston, House of the Dragon gives both figures more complex character dynamics amidst the chaos of war.
